Shimmering Edge Tag

Tutorial written for PSP 8, but it should be possible to make this tag using versions 7 or 9, although some items may be on different menus or locations

No plugin filters required!

 

New Image, 300x300 pixels, transparent background, raster

 

Click the Flood Fill tool

Set the foreground color to the colour you want in your background (I've used a light purple), and set the background colour to white.

Set the foreground material to gradient, and then click the large colour block so that you can set the gradient options.

Gradient = Foreground - Background
Style = Radial
Angle = 0
Repeats = 15
Horizontal = 50
Vertical = 50
Invert = ticked

Fill the canvas with the gradient

 

 

Image menu, Resize

85 %
All Layers = unticked

 

Effects menu, Distortion Effects, Spiky Halo

Horizontal = 0
Vertical = 0
Amplitude = 2
Frequency = 3
Radius % = 1
Edge Mode = Transparent

 

Effects menu, Distortion Effects, Twirl

Degrees = 50

 

Click on the Magic Wand selection tool.  

Make these settings on the Tool Options pallet

Mode = Replace
Match Mode = All Opaque
Feather = 0
Anti-Alias = ticked and outside option (Smooth on PSP 9)

 

Click anywhere on your filled shape, and you should get marching ants neatly around its edge.

 

In PSP 8 or 9:

Selections menu, Modify, Select Selection Borders

Inside selected
Border Width = 3
Anti-Alias = ticked

In PSP 7:

Selections menu, Modify, Contract 3
Selections menu, Invert
Selections menu, Float
Selections menu, Defloat

Selections menu, Load/Save Selection, Save Selection to Alpha Channel - just click save with the default name/settings.

Effects menu, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow

Horizontal = 1
Vertical = 1
Opacity = 60
Blur = 6
Color = Black

Layers menu, Merge, Merge All (Flatten)

 

Layers menu, New Raster Layer

Add your tube to this layer, making sure it fits inside the edges of the background shape.

Add your text also at this stage

 

Layers Menu, New Vector Layer

Click on the Text Tool

Make sure the "Create As" option is set to Vector

On the materials pallet, set the foreground and background colour to solid color.  

Set the Stroke width to 2

Click you your image wherever you want your text, and enter it in the text box. Highlight the text in the box and adjust the font and size.  Click Apply when you are happy

Click on the Object Selector tool (Picker tool in PSP Photo XI), and use it to stretch and position the text.

 

When you are happy with your text.....

Layers menu, Convert To Raster Layer
(If your text goes jagged at the edges, undo and repeat the layer conversion again - it seems to work better the 2nd time)

Effects menu, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow

Horizontal = 1
Vertical = 1
Opacity = 55
Blur = 4
Color = Black

Layers menu, Merge, Merge All (Flatten)

Layers menu, Duplicate

Layers menu, Duplicate (again, so you end up with 3 identical layers)

Selections menu, Load/Save Selections, Load Selection from Alpha Channel.  The default settings are correct - Click the Load button.

You should see a double line of marching ants around the edge of your background shape.

On the Layer Pallet, make sure the top layer is selected.

Adjust, Add/Remove Noise, Add Noise

Uniform, 55%, monochrome ticked

Adjust, Hue and Saturation, Colorise

Pick a Hue (color) to go with your background, and set the saturation to 160

On the Layer Pallet, click on the middle layer.

Adjust, Add/Remove Noise, Add Noise

Uniform, 60%, monochrome ticked

Adjust, Hue and Saturation, Colorise - apply with the same settings you used before (as is).

On the Layer Pallet, click on the bottom layer.

Adjust, Add/Remove Noise, Add Noise

Uniform, 65%, monochrome ticked

Adjust, Hue and Saturation, Colorise - apply with the same settings you used before (as is).

Selections menu, Select None

 

 

 

 

 

File menu, Save As

for PSP 7, save as a psp file.  For PSP 8 or 9, set the file type to Animation Shop.

Save the file, making sure you know what you have called it and what folder it is saved in.

 

Open up Animation Shop

File, Preferences, General Program Preferences

On the Layered Files tab, set the option to "Keep layers as separate frames", and then click OK.

Open your saved file (it has a .psp extension)..... the layers are automatically converted into frames.
